Sino al 1976 si chiamava "Scuola Secondaria e Istituto Educativo Gazi" e dal 1976 al 1982 portava il nome di "Istituto Educativo Gaz

i". L'edificio dell'università è stato costruito da Mimar Kemaleddin.
