Tresana, Italy
Tresana (Tresàna in Lunigiano dialect) is a comune of about 1,864 inhabitants in the province of Massa-Carrara, Tuscany, whose municipal seat is in the frazione of Barbarasco. The territory, nestled between the Apuan Alps and the Ligurian Apennines, has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evi
denced by the petroglyphs in the nearby Grotta del Farneto. The medieval Castle of Tresana, first documented in 1036, was a strategic stronghold of the Malaspina family, who ruled the Lunigiana for centuries. The fortress, rebuilt in the 12th-13th centuries, features a square keep and remnants of the original curtain walls. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Barbarasco, built in 1742 on a earlier medieval structure, showcases a Baroque facade with local white marble. The historic center of Tresana Alta, perched at 540 meters, preserves a labyrinth of narrow stone alleys, medieval houses, and the ruins of the ancient castle. The area is also known for its marble quarries, active since Roman times, and the nearby Grotta di Popolasca, one of the largest karst caves in Tuscany.
