The Bourtree. These licensed premises are named after the bourtrees (or elder trees) that stood in Bourtree Place and gave the street its name. The building is the former Conservative Club. The foundation stone was laid by Margaret Countess of Dalkeith, using a silver trowel, on 6th October 1897. Th

e half-acre site had been purchased from her father-in-law the Duke of Buccleuch.
