King Edmund hid under a bridge during a battle against the heathen Danes. Many bridge chapels were dedicated to him, including one here on the medieval Exebridge. It became a parish church, was rebuilt in 1833-4, damaged by fire in 1969 and made safe by partial demolition in 1975.
