Michael Davitt (1846-1906) was born in Straide, County Mayo, and devoted much of his life's work to the cause of Irish Independence, social justice and improving the conditions of the tenant farmer. He was the founder of the Irish National Land League in 1879. Davitt lived in the 'Land League Cottag
