Il fiume viene alimentato dall'acqua di fusione del ghiacciaio Snæfellsjökull, per cui ha una portata molto elevata durante la stagione calda che si riduce notevolmente, fino a scomparire, durante la stagione fredda. e carico di sedimenti trasportati.
