Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC 1920-1944 Awarded the George Cross (GC), the highest award for conspicuous courage out of battle. Corporal Horsfield was born in Hyde, served in the 9th Manchester Regiment, and was seconded to the SAS. He is the only Tameside citizen to have received this award followi

ng his gallant rescue efforts that resulted in his own loss of life in Italy on 18 August 1944. Croft Street was the former family home.
