The Treaty of Ripon. Near this site once stood Nunwick Prebend House where in October 1640, when Charles I had been ruling without a Parliament for 11 years, the Treaty of Ripon was signed. This Treaty, between the King and the Scottish Covenaters, resulted in calling the "Long Parliament", which su
bstantially curtailed the powers of the English Monarchy.
