Gilbert Elliot and John Stewart blue plaque

In the 18th century this was the Black Bull Inn. In 1726 a murder took place here, when Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs drew his sword and stabbed Colonel Stewart of Stewartfield. Much alcohol had been taken and an argument about political matters had arisen. Sir Gilbert escaped and hid in the graveyard

later to be smuggled abroad and ultimately pardoned.
