One of America's earliest themed amusement parks, Children's Fairyland opened in Oakland, California, on September 2, 1950, inspired by a 1947 visit to Detroit's Belle Isle children's zoo. It is home to the Open Storybook Puppet Theater, the oldest continuously operating puppet theater in the United

States, and once drew Walt Disney himself, who hired its first director Dorothy Manes to help launch Disneyland.
