Clitheroe was granted a charter by Henry de Lacy in (circa) 1147 and its existence as a borough lasted from that date until 1974 when under the Local Government Act of 1972 Clitherie lost its borough status and was merged with other neighbouring local authorities to b
ecome part of the Ribble Valley Borough Council but continued in its own right as a town council
