The Newgate. This building, begun in 1756, replaced the Tolbooth which stood at the top of the Canongate. It contained a courthouse and a prison. The spire was added in 1791 and contains three bells, including one from the Abbey. The burgh arms, dated 1720, above the arch came from the well head of
the town's first public water supply.
