Famous for its royal connection, from June 7th, 1645, in the Civil War, Charles I lodged here for 6 days before having

to retreat when Oliver Cromwell's parliamentary forces, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax, came too close for comfort. He moved to the Three Swans at Market Harborough for a night before the Battle of Naseby
