North Transept - The canons, who were all priests, said Mass daily at altars situated here. The prayers were largely for the benefactors and patrons of the Abbey. The Abbey of St. Mary was founded for Augustinian canons in around 1124 and closed by Henry VIII in 1538. Although by 1600 most of the bu

ilding had been dismantled some parts survive today both above and below ground. The name 'Abbey Fields' reminds us of the Abbey that once stood here.
