Cloister - The cloister was the heart of communal life. Its corridors provided covered access to all of the main Abbey buildings. Here the canons went about their scholarly activities, such as copying document. The Abbey of St. Mary was founded for Augustinian canons in around 1124 and closed by Hen

ry VIII in 1538. Although by 1600 most of the building had been dismantled some parts survive today both above and below ground. The name 'Abbey Fields' reminds us of the Abbey that once stood here.
