Gatehouse - The Gatehouse , which has lost its upper floor, was the main entrance to the Abbey from High Street. Here the poor would have been given food and drink . The Abbey of St. Mary was founded for Augustinian canons in around 1124 and closed by Henry VIII in 1538. Although by 1600 most of the
building had been dismantled some parts survive today both above and below ground. The name 'Abbey Fields' reminds us of the Abbey that once stood here
