Site of Old Jacksonville. Founded about 1847 by Jackson Smith near his combination blacksmith shop and post office, called "Gum Creek". Was flourishing village of 150 pop. in 1872. I & G N Railroad missed the town. Almost overnight the residents moved to the new townsite on the railroad. #6827
