Big Badlands Overlook is a scenic viewpoint located near Wall, South Dakota, within Badlands National Park. This overlook provides visitors with a panoramic view of the eastern portion of the Badlands wall, an erosional feature that stretches from near the town of Kadoka in the east to the town of W

all in the west. On clear days, the horizon to the southeast reveals Eagle Nest Butte, a prominent landmark situated next to the town of Wanblee, South Dakota. The overlook is an excellent spot for understanding the region's geology, as it exposes the lower units of the Badlands Formations. The reddish stripes that dominate the view belong to the Brule Formation, specifically the Scenic Member, dating from the Oligocene Epoch (33.7 to 32.0 million years ago). Beneath these, the darker gray beds near the base of the outcrops are part of the older Chadron Formation, specifically the Peanut Peak Member, dating from the Eocene Epoch (35.0 to 33.7 million years ago). These ancient rock layers tell a story of environmental change over millions of years, from the subtropical forests of the Eocene to the open plains of the Oligocene. The Badlands formations themselves are dynamic, eroding at a rate of one inch per year, which means they have only an estimated 500,000 years left before they are completely worn away.
