Bayan'obo Mining District (Mongolian: ᠪᠠᠶᠠᠨ ᠣᠪᠣᠭ᠋᠎ᠠ ᠠᠭᠤᠷᠬᠠᠢ ᠶᠢᠨ ᠲᠣᠭᠣᠷᠢᠭ, Chinese: 白云鄂博矿区), or Baiyun-Obo or Baiyun'ebo, is a mining district in the west of Inner Mongolia, China. It is under the administration of Baotou City, the downtown of which is more than 120 kilometres (75 mi) to the south. Th

e mines north of the town are the largest deposits of rare-earth elements yet found and, as of 2005, responsible for 45% of global rare-earth element production. As of 2006, two circular open-pit mines are visible, as well as a number of tailings ponds and tailings piles. The mining site has doubled in size over 25 years, and new open-pit mines were opened to the west of the site as of 2013.
